TAHINI CHOCOLATE CHUNK SHORTBREAD COOKIES

At my first real job just out of college, I’d pass the time between meetings looking at lifestyle and design blogs, which I’d never encountered until then. My desk was a nondescript study in beige with a utilitarian wheeled chair, a double-screen PC, and a putty-colored faux wall divider—there I’d sit, scrolling through the pages.

The office was in a 40-story high-rise right in the middle of Times Square. The closest you could get to nature was snagging a metal bistro chair on the rectangular lawn of Bryant Park, which on a nice day would be mobbed with New Yorkers. Walking outside on a coffee break meant encountering a sea of concrete and pigeons and so many tourists lining up in front of the M&M store that you’d have to step off the sidewalks and navigate the steam grates in heels. Lunch was usually leftovers from last night’s dinner, stashed in a Tupperware in the office mini fridge. The coffee was lukewarm and the entire building felt like one long trip to Office Depot: fluorescent lighting and piles of ballpoint pens that never wrote smoothly and stacks of thin computer paper and clunky phones with tightly coiled plastic cords.

LIGHTEST CIABATTA

June 5, 2021 Posie Brien

It’s a bluebird day—finally, after a week of humid, gray days where cool drizzle hung like a curtain over town. I felt my spirits sinking lower with every inch of rain, every sweatshirt I pulled on to ward off the odd May chill, every hour that felt endless, unspooling languidly, like time was some sticky molasses-like substance being poured slowly from a bottle.

The sun is bright overhead, and I could swear it’s suffusing everyone’s very being with light—we’re all thrilled that summer has arrived. Neighbors wave cheerily as they pass with their dogs, live music drifts down the street from the brewery where people sit outside drinking tall pints of summer ale, the golden light filtering through the golden liquid like some dreamy Rothko-esque canvas.

VEGAN CHOCOLATE SHORTBREAD MOUSSE BARS

Vegan Shortbread.jpg

On Wednesday, I sat down to write something here. I tried six different times to write six different posts about six different substantial things—stalling each time about 3 sentences in, because I was so deeply tired that the day before I mixed up the names of my neighbor’s dogs and I could barely remember the word for spatula and yet I still woke up—without the aid of an alarm clock—at 5:41 AM the following morning. Fine, fine! I thought irritably at my body. Fine you win! I’ll just go take a 7 mile run and a swim and bake two quiche crusts and make pancakes and by 9 AM feel like a limp, cooked-five-minutes-past-al-dente piece of linguine and when I try to pick up my 14-month-old, the words “Herculean effort” will spangle and sparkle in front of my eyes like a neon ticker-tape. This is fine. Is this why people day drink? Kidding, that would be a disaster. Or would it be just the ticket…?

TRIPLE ALMOND BROWN BUTTER CAKE

Almond Bundt.jpg

Before dinner but after my shower the other night, when the sun hadn’t begun to set but the heat outside was starting to loosen its grip on the day, I put on pajamas and lay flat on my back on the bedroom floor. I didn’t move for minutes. I just stared up through the picture windows and noticed a plane—its tiny wings looking toy-like from a distance.

GREEN WAFFLES

Green Waffles-4.jpg

As someone who doesn’t much adhere to the habit of a conventional breakfast (by which I mean eating a meal first thing in the morning), I do love breakfast foods. I see no reason why something as good as a perfectly cooked omelette should be relegated to the wee hours of the morning only. The French seem to have this right—bistro menus often feature an omelette (fluffy and yellow, rolled into a fat cylinder, without a speck of browning on the surface) oozing Gruyere cheese, dotted with fines herbes, and accompanied by a tangle of lightly dressed greens and a glass of white wine.
