ALMOND PASTE WAFFLES

Fresh air and exercise (or movement) is always a good idea. I’m of the mindset that there’s very little that can’t be at least slightly improved by a walk—or, put differently, I never regret getting outside. If that means a three minute stroll down to the end of the street to stand on the dock and watch the seagulls toss razor clam shells onto the beach, that’s better than nothing.

If it means getting in the car to go park at the trailhead in the next town over (where miles of soft grassy trail are hidden behind the marshes along the narrowest part of the coastline, just before the tip of the island tapers into the sea), and hiking for a solid hour, even better.

EXTRA-SPICY PUMPKIN BREAD

If you missed it, you should spend a few minutes reading this beautiful piece by Christopher Solomon (contributing editor at Outside magazine) that ran in the New York Times last month. It’s a meditation on the nagging worry of the impending winter and what it will bring this year.

He writes with a lilting, melodic style that brings you right into his moment, even if you’ve never been there yourself. Sentences like: “October’s yellow afternoons smell of winter at the edges. The soft ovation of the cottonwoods sends another round of leaves adrift on the water.” or “We put our hands on the still-warm granite of the climbing pitch rather than cook down the applesauce. We take ridgeline hikes among larch the color of struck matches when we should be at the work desk. We run for hours through the mountains without thought of tomorrow’s soreness, or the firewood left uncut. We tear at the days immoderately, like animals, and we wolf them down, hoping to fill a hole we see yawning ahead.”

SPICED PEAR BREAD

Actor Hugh Laurie (yes, he of the sardonic British wit and House acting fame, although I know and love him best for his role in Jeeves and Wooster) apparently put out a blues album a few years ago. Who knew he had such versatility?! We all contain multitudes, as it turns out. Upon being asked why he went out on such a limb, career-wise, he said this: “It’s a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you’re ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any.”

VANILLA CRÈME FRAÎCHE BANANA BREAD

At my first job out of college, a guy on my team used to eat the exact same lunch every single day. (Okay technically it was my second job—but the real first lasted a whopping 5 days that flew by in a whirl of tailored pencil skirts with stilettos, mergers & acquisitions trainings, mind-numbing Excel spreadsheet manipulation, Seamless-ordered dinners with beers enjoyed in an airless cubicle, and deeply existential misery as to my life’s path: a story for another time!)

SAVORY BLACK SESAME + CHEESE BABKA

There’s a particular, specific delight in finding pleasure in unexpected places. When I was 13, I spent a month in Europe with my grandparents and my little sister, who was 11 and wretchedly homesick at the time. The evenings were the hardest for her, as they tend to be (isn’t it always when dusk falls when we feel the most woebegone when we’re sick or sad or down?).
