POUND CAKE + A DAY IN NYC

October 18, 2015 Posie Brien

You don’t need a guide to New York City. There are a million in existence, and you likely have friends to tell you where to go and what to eat. Sure, if you want to eat at Red Lobster and see bright lights, do it. But I always think it’s nice to see the quieter, less traveled parts of a city as a visitor. If I designed a day for someone visiting –provided they didn’t need to do bucket list things like go to the Met or eat at Katz’s—here’s what I’d do. This isn’t quintessential New York and it doesn’t check any famous boxes. But it’s a collection of seriously fantastic and pretty places that are worth seeing:

PUMPKIN BUNDT CAKE

October 1, 2015 Posie Brien

Here we are again. Autumn is slowly appearing, teasing its way into the muggy heat that still sticks like a blanket over everything.

Or deep, dark, intensely rich chocolate ribboned with fudge frosting and a shower of chocolate sprinkles. Wax candles sparkling. The words happy birthday lettered in script. Celebration. Sneaking bites of  dense, cold cake in the morning when the icing has crystallized, the sugar gritty between your teeth.

GRAHAM CRACKER LAYER CAKE

September 3, 2015 Posie Brien

Where do you go for comfort? Is it a coffee shop, corner table, foamy latte in a chipped mug? I picture you taking a long run: following the same well-traversed turns and trails, your thoughts slowly slipping away as the miles pass, yielding to sweat and exertion and the tinny music on your headphones.

CLASSIC ICEBOX CAKE

July 23, 2015 Posie Brien

I am a card-carrying member of the Soft Food Lovers club. Actually, there's no card but I'm considering making one because I know I am not alone. I could easily and happily live on a steady stream of creamy hummus and chocolate pudding, with a break now and again for some ice cream and buttery mashed potatoes.
