TWO-BANANA BROWN BUTTER BANANA BREAD

September 4, 2020 Posie Brien
Two Banana Bread.jpg

Wait a second, you’re thinking. She just posted a rye banana bread recipe. This girl is either floundering under the waves of early parenthood and actually losing her mind OR she is strangely fixated on banana bread.

And I’d ask you: can’t it be both? Just kidding! Not floundering! I promise. But to be honest, some days I do arrive at 5 PM and look back with wonder at the morning, thinking it must have been weeks ago that I woke up, not mere hours. There is a lot more occupying my mind—and my hands—these days, in the nicest way possible, and it is not inconceivable that I would forget about having just posted a similar recipe. Just as I might forget to switch the wet laundry to the dryer, or be unable to remember where I put the stamps, or completely lose track of my phone for the one millionth time.

RYE BANANA BREAD

Today, I offer a list of good things for you. In no particular order and having nothing in particular in common, beyond the fact that I like them all.

  1. Fresh mint (mint limeade kombucha / fresh berries tossed with chopped mint and lime zest

  2. Mayonnaise (controversial opinion, but just try eating a BLT without it)

  3. Walking barefoot on warm pavement

  4. Words that sound like what they mean: elision, lithe, disheveled

  5. Nice glassware (I have these Burgundy ones and these for sparkling and these for juice and espresso)

CHOCOLATE COCONUT CAKE

If you’ve read my writing much (you’re a gem if you just nodded), then you might remember that I love mail. Real mail. Handwritten letters and packages and the like. The farm where I grew up has a veeeery long driveway—about a third of a mile—and when you pull into the top of it, the entire farm is spread out in front of you like a beautifully draped blanket in greens and golds. The first bit slopes gently, then flattens out once you pass the edge of the woods; there used to be a huge, sprawling oak tree on one side and my dad kept a hive of honeybees on the other.

DOUBLE VANILLA ICEBOX CAKE

August 10, 2020 Posie Brien
Icebox-Cake-2.jpg

In the pantheon of packaged snack food, I consider Nilla wafers woefully under-represented. Or, under-appreciated, more specifically. If you walk down the snack food aisle (ha! remember leisurely doing grocery shopping without anxiety?), Nilla wafers are usually tucked down on a bottom shelf, placed suspiciously close to the organic granola and rolled oats section. They are overlooked in favor of splashier boxes and bags: Flamin’ Hot Cheetos! Cool Ranch Doritos! Pringles! Oreos! Parmesan Goldfish (don’t make that face at me, this is the best flavor and it’s not up for discussion)!

PISTACHIO CARDAMOM CUPCAKES

It’s awfully nice to have things to look forward to. Anticipation is so much of what drives a pleasurable life—it’s the forward-thinking cousin of nostalgia. Because we aren’t able to eagerly await many of the normal events lately (travel, vacations, weddings, parties, meeting a random stranger, ANYTHING BASICALLY), we have to craft our own excitements.
