CREAMY FETA PASTA

Are you in the mood to hear about some nice things? (Please tell me you just shouted “YES!” out loud. If you didn't, perhaps examine your emotional state? Maybe pour yourself a glass of wine? Oh, it’s only 10 AM, you say? Have it with a piece of buttered baguette and call it a “French breakfast”, I suspect you need it.)

- These dresses, made in the UK by a Ghanaian designer, are so wildly beautiful that I’m tempted to buy a few despite having absolutely nowhere to wear them. I particularly love this red striped shirtdress, this blue batik-printed maxi dress, and this one-shoulder situation which also comes in blue.

BEEF STROGANOFF WITH ZUCCHINI RIBBONS

And just like that we’ve turned the corner into fall. Technically it’s still summer, and I suspect that there will be a handful of hot and humid days ahead, but there’s an indefinable shift in the air.

There’s a hint of crispness hiding behind the heat and sunshine. Images begin to collect and shimmer at the back of my mind, not entirely formed yet, but there nonetheless: freshly-sharpened pencils and backpacks and flannel shirts and steaming mugs of coffee and the cinnamon-y scent of warm apple cider.

CUTTLEFISH INK PASTA WITH CHICKEN + SPINACH

Again, a list. (Don’t look at me like that! This is not a cop-out of a blog post or a sneaky avoidance of any actual writing, nor is it an indication of my brain being not entirely up to forming full sentences. Or is it…?)

Regardless, this is a collection of bits and snippets that I’m excited about—and it’s as much of a way to inspire you as it is a way to remind me about each of these items. If I didn't list them here, I’d probably end up sticking half of them on Post-Its which would get lost in the pages of cookbooks on my bookshelf or hidden underneath a pile of size 6-9 month whale-printed pajamas. Or I’d jot a few of them down in the Notes app on my phone and bookmark some in a random collection on Pinterest—obviously forgetting that I never remember to actually check or open either of those apps.

CHERRY TOMATO JAM

September 5, 2020 Posie Brien
Cherry Tomato Jam-2.jpg

If the past few months have taught me anything, it’s that I need very little in the way of stuff. I suppose that intellectually I always knew this to be true; I’ve lived at plenty of times over the years out of a backpack or a camp trunk or a suitcase—but those were always brief interludes to normal life. These days, 90% of my belongings are crammed higgledy-piggledy in a storage unit somewhere outside of Baltimore. I think (fingers crossed!) that most of my clothes and books and…well, everything I own…is still there, but for the first time ever, movers packed it up (unsupervised) so I can only hope and cross my fingers and toes.

PERFECT COUSCOUS

September 3, 2020 Posie Brien
Couscous.jpg

I woke up this morning to a gray world outside. The trees outside my window were obscured by a thin veil of drizzle—it wasn't raining in earnest yet, but the skies were a dull pewter and the roses climbing our neighbor’s trellis trembled in the wind.

Instead of staying under the covers—the pintucked white duvet pulled snugly around my still-sleepy form—I got up. (See, there’s this cool new kind of real life alarm clock called a 5-month-old baby. Works like a charm, man.)
